A surprising number of no-cooling calls end at the thermostat: dead batteries, a miswired replacement, a smart thermostat fighting the system's staging. Before you assume the AC failed, it is worth knowing the thermostat is the cheapest fix in the whole system.
We install, program, and troubleshoot thermostats across Stuart and Martin County — from basic digitals to smart thermostats — wired correctly for heat pumps, multi-stage systems, and dehumidification.
Thermostat Problems We See
The classics: a blank screen (often just batteries, sometimes a tripped float switch that killed power to the thermostat), a system that short-cycles because the thermostat sits in a draft or in direct sun, and a DIY smart-thermostat install with the wrong wires on the wrong terminals.
Heat pumps add their own layer — the thermostat has to call for auxiliary heat correctly, or the electric strips run far more than they should and the bill shows it. If the heat strips seem to run constantly on mild nights, the thermostat setup is suspect number one.
Smart Thermostats, Set Up Right
A smart thermostat is only as good as its configuration. Staging, cycle rates, auxiliary heat lockout, and dehumidification settings all have to match the equipment — defaults rarely do. We install the thermostat, wire it to the system it actually controls, and program the settings for a Florida cooling load.
We also confirm the C-wire situation. Many older Stuart homes lack a common wire, and a smart thermostat without one borrows power in ways that cause phantom behavior. We wire it properly instead.
Placement Matters
A thermostat in direct sunlight, above a lamp, or in the path of a supply register reads the wrong temperature and drives the system crazy. During service visits we flag bad placement, and when we relocate one we put it on an interior wall, away from heat sources and drafts, at the height the system was designed around.
Small detail, big difference in how the house feels — and how often the system cycles.
Common questions
My thermostat screen is blank. Is the AC broken?
Maybe not — check the batteries first. If that doesn't fix it, a tripped condensate float switch may have cut power to the thermostat, which means the drain line needs attention. Call us and we'll sort it out.
Can I install a smart thermostat myself?
Physically, often yes. But miswired heat pump terminals and wrong staging settings cause real problems — including auxiliary heat running nonstop. If you want it done right the first time, we install and program it for your exact system.
Why does my AC short-cycle?
Sometimes it's the thermostat — bad placement, wrong cycle-rate settings, or a failing unit. Sometimes it's the system. A diagnostic tells us which before anyone quotes a repair.
Do smart thermostats save money in Florida?
They can, mainly through scheduling and humidity-aware settings — but only when configured for the equipment. An unconfigured smart thermostat saves nothing.
