Something electrical is misbehaving and you want to know whether it is annoying or dangerous. These guides cover the electrical problems we see every day in Stuart and Martin County — the safe homeowner checks, and the clear line where you stop and call.
The safety rule for the whole guide: never open the panel, never touch wiring. Reset a tripped breaker once, check GFCI buttons and bulbs — everything past that is our job.
Safe Checks Anyone Can Do
Reset a tripped breaker exactly once — if it trips again, stop. Press the reset button on GFCI outlets (kitchens, baths, garage, outdoors) — one tripped GFCI can kill power to several downstream outlets. Check the bulb in a dead light, and check whether the switch controls a switched outlet you forgot about.
That is the complete homeowner toolkit. Everything else — opening boxes, testing wires, replacing breakers — needs a tech with meters and the training to use them.
When It Is Urgent
Call immediately — not the form, the phone — for: burning smells from outlets, switches, or the panel; sparking or scorch marks; a panel that feels hot; outlets or switches that are hot to the touch; or lights dimming across the whole house when a large appliance starts.
Those symptoms mean failing connections or overloaded equipment. They get priority scheduling, day or night.
Common questions
Is it safe to reset a tripped breaker myself?
Once, yes. If it holds, note what was running and watch it. If it trips again immediately or keeps tripping, stop resetting it and call us.
My outlet sparks when I plug something in. Dangerous?
A tiny spark on plug-in can be normal; consistent sparking, large sparks, or scorch marks are not. If it sparks every time, stop using it and call.
Half my house lost power. What do I check?
Check the main breaker and whether neighbors have power too — a utility outage or a lost leg of service affects half the panel. If it's just your house, call us promptly.
